The Consultation

Here’s what happens in our consultations:

Observing the Tongue

Tongue diagnosis has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. We inspect the colour, shape, tongue coat and the moisture of the tongue. These qualities give us important information about a person’s internal health.

A healthy tongue is a fresh pink colour with a thin white coat. Any variations in colour or coat indicate an imbalance in the body. For example, a thick white tongue coat is a sign of internal dampness, and a patient with such a tongue might have symptoms such as digestive problems, bowel problems (such as diarrhoea), or lethargy.

Feeling the Pulse

We feel your wrist pulse on both left and right sides. We check your pulse at every treatment to monitor your progress. As your health improves, so too does your pulse.

Pulse diagnosis is important because, like tongue diagnosis, it provides very detailed information on the state of the internal organs. We feel the overall rate, width, strength, depth and shape of the pulse to give us an overall quality. For example, a person with a ‘wiry’ pulse is often suffering stress, pain, fluid or circulation blockages.

We also feel precise pulse positions on the wrist to assess specific organs (there are 12 organs represented at the wrist pulse). For example, in patients with asthma it is common to find problems at the ‘lung’ pulse position, while in patients with fertility issues we often find problems with the ‘kidney’ pulse.

Your pulse also varies with the seasons. This is because the pulse naturally reflects the energy of the environment. In summer the pulse is more superficial and full, whereas in winter it is deeper.

Questions

We take the time to discuss your health conditions. We will ask about aspects of your health such as your sleep, energy levels, digestion, aches and pains, bowel and urination habits, emotional state, and for women there will be questions regarding the menstrual cycle.

Following Nicole’s health assessment, a treatment plan will be outlined for you which will detail the approximate number and frequency of visits required in order for you to achieve your health goals.

The consultation will then be followed by an acupuncture treatment, and if required, your herbal prescription will be prepared.
