Women’s Health

Acupuncture and herbs offer women a natural, gentle and effective way to bring their bodies back into balance.

Women may face gynaecological issues at any stage of their lives . This is because the female reproductive system is complex and delicate, with regular fluctuations of hormones taking place to ensure a healthy menstrual cycle.  This system can be easily disrupted, but also gently regulated using acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Here’s what Nicole has to say about women’s health:

‘Women’s Health’ is a broad term – what sort of problems do you treat which fall in this category?

Women regularly see me for fertility support, menstrual problems, menopause symptoms, and a range of gynaecological and obstetric conditions.

OK, let’s start with ‘fertility support’.  What do you mean by that?

There are two categories of women who see us for fertility support:  those who’ve had trouble conceiving and those who plan to start trying to conceive in the near future.

There are many reasons why women have difficulty falling pregnant.  Other than simply having tried unsuccessfully for a period of time to fall pregnant, some of the more common situations we see are:

  • Women who have recently stopped taking the pill or other hormonal contraceptive and their period hasn’t returned
  • A diagnosed gynaecological problem such as PCOS, endometriosis or fibroids interfering with fertility
  • Diagnosed cases of ‘unexplained infertility’
  • Immune or hormonal imbalances
  • IVF failure
  • Women who want natural support for their current IVF cycle

The second group of women we see are those who have not yet started trying to conceive, but want to soon.  These women are getting ahead of the game – they want to be in a healthy condition to not only give themselves the greatest chances of falling pregnant, but to have a healthy pregnancy to full-term.

What kind of menstrual problems do you see at Sydney City Acupuncture?

There are numerous menstrual problems which we have successfully treated: painful periods (dysmenorrhoea); irregular periods; very heavy periods (menorrhagia); no periods (amenorrhoea); very light periods (oligomenorrhoea or hypomenorrhoea); PMT; and menopause-related problems.

What other conditions do you see which fall under ‘women’s health’?

Uterine prolapse, hormonal imbalances, abnormal vaginal discharges, thrush, and a range of obstetric conditions including morning sickness and breech baby.

Why is acupuncture and herbal medicine so effective at treating women’s health problems?

Acupuncture and herbal medicine is a gentle form of treatment which helps to regulate and harmonise the body systems.  For example, in the case of menstrual problems and fertility issues, this means that acupuncture and herbal medicine rebalance the hormones and strengthen the body to promote conception.  Acupuncture and herbal medicine work naturally with the body to enhance its normal physiological function.  In other words, they gently remind the body to function as it should.
